Heidelberg University has a leading position in the Molecular Life Sciences at the national level and is highly visible internationally. The quality and diversity of research institutions at the University and its external partners offer a unique prospect for future development as these institutes work together on basic questions of molecular life sciences.

The HMLS (Heidelberg Molecular Life Sciences )programme was established within the institutional strategy of Heidelberg University in order to fully tap this outstanding potential. HMLS is integrating and bridging molecular life sciences at the University, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). A central component will be to establish thematically oriented research programmes beyond the boundaries of individual institutions as outlined in the Initiative for Excellence proposal.
