The Department of Molecular Plant Physiology and Biophysics, headed by Prof. Hedrich, focuses its research on ion transport mechanisms in plants. Ion channels, carriers and pumps are studied from the molecular level, up to whole plant physiology. Subjected of our attention are the molecular mechanisms operating in ion-transporters, as well as the signaling pathways regulating these proteins. The laboratory applies wide range of biophysical techniques like patch clamp, multi-electrode voltage clamp and fluorescent-based imaging in combination with molecular biology and protein biochemistry.
