University of Freiburg

Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK)

The Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg is one of the largest academic institutions worldwide dedicated to education of microsystems engineers and research and development of microsystems technologies, counting a total of 18 professors (+200 scientists). The Laboratory of MEMS Applications headed by Professor Roland Zengerle numbers more than 30 engineers, biologists and technicians. The broad range of the personnel expertise reflects its high interdisciplinarity, which is essential to cope with the challenges of the activities related to Lab-on-Chip, microTAS, microfluidics systems and platforms for biological applications from simulation and prototyping, to development and full implementation. In this field, a strong collaboration with its strategic partner HSG-IMIT (leading private non-profit R&D provider for micro components and systems) gives access to additional resources. The group is (and has been) involved in various EC projects (FP6, FP7), indicative of its active involvement in the latest technological advancements of microsystems technology for life science. The group is closely involved with industrial partners, which allows it to translate the newest achievements of microsystem technology directly into products.
