The Division of Grassland Science at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is looking to fill the position of a

PhD student

This position should be filled by 01.04.2015, with a limited contract of 3 years. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L) with 50% of the regular working hours (19.90 h per week).

Project description
Within the framework of the multidisciplinary project ‘Milk production from grazing and livestock’ we will investigate aspects of efficient use of farm manure in grassland. For the purpose of an extended modelling approach loss of N after application (NH3) and N leaching losses (NO3-N) shall be determined in experiments. The amount of N applied and the grassland management are varied in field trials. This approach combines knowledge and methods of plant science, soil science and meteorology. The aim is to optimize the utilization of farm manures in intensive cut and grazed grassland systems and to minimize losses.    

Your responsibilities
- setting up and day to day running of field research: productivity, sampling and maintaining suction cup system, application of fertilizer etc.
- analysis of samples from soil, plant, water
- contribution to the overall project work, collaboration with other work packages
- data analysis, modelling, preparation of scientific publications and project reports

Your profile
- highly qualified master or diploma in agriculture, geoecology, environmental sciences or a related discipline
- experience in field research in agricultural or ecological sciences
- good knowledge of statistical analysis methods and modelling
- ability to both work self-reliantly and as part of a team, good organization and communication skills, high analytical and conceptual capabilities
- temporal flexibility regarding practical work at the experimental site (County Cloppenburg)
- advanced command of English and German
