Breeder (m/f) for Germplasm Enhancement

on a full-time and permanent basis for our breeding station of the KWS LOCHOW GMBH in Wohlde/Germany.
As breeder in the Cereals Department, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of breeding procedures for germplasm enhancement. An important part of the job will be the identification of appropriate germplasm sources for the introgression of traits of interest (e.g. yield), development of test units to evaluate the potential of such genetic resources as well as their genetic exploitation for instance via (backcross) breeding programs. The latter will involve the analysis and interpretation of breeding experiments and marker-trait association studies in collaboration with our Breeding and Biotechnology Teams.

Your responsibilities:

  • Design and implementation of strategies to explore the genetic architecture of relevant agronomical traits and development of new methods for selecting upon them
  • Design and implementation of breeding strategies to introgress traits from genetic resources into elite germplasm. This will involve the design, implementation, and optimization of marker-assisted selection procedures to introgress oligogenic and quantitative traits, in close interaction with our Biotechnology and Breeding Teams
  • Development of breeding material/populations to support research breeding experiments
  • Implementation of company-own software and scripts for statistical analysis of phenotypic data and marker-trait association studies
  • Act as contact person and collaboration partner for diverse research projects within the Cereals Department and across species in KWS as well as with academic research partners, especially in the fields of use of genetic resources and introgression of native traits
  • Oral and written communication of results of experiments

Your profile:

  • Ph.D. in plant breeding
  • Strong bases in breeding methods, population genetics, and molecular breeding
  • Knowledge in statistical genetics
  • Familiarity with standard general-purpose statistical software and databases
  • Experience with basic procedural programming (preferably R) to design and evaluate scripts for phenotypic and marker-trait association analyses is of advantage
  • Good bases in agronomy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Professional written and verbal English is mandatory, language skills in German are a plus
  • Ability to collaborate with laboratory scientists and breeders from KWS and academic partners
