Job Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct pharmacological studies in rat and mouse models of neurodegeneration based on viral vector-mediated, genetic and pharmacological approaches to evaluate the neuroprotective potential of novel CNS drug candidates
  • Perform behavioral assessments on clinically relevant, neurological readouts (e.g. motor function and cognition)
  • Measure physiological parameters such as heart rate, body temperature, electromyography
  • Dose animals (po, ip, sc)
  • Prepare biological samples (brain, spinal cord, muscle, cerebrospinal fluid, blood)
  • Assess biomarkers with different analytical methods (e.g., ELISA, RIA, Western blot, qRT-PCR)
  • Perform surgeries (e.g., stereotaxic surgery, implantation of osmotic mini-pumps and telemetry transmitters) in rats and mice
  • Efficiently plan, analyse, document and present experiments in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Proactively drive the setup, evaluation and validation of new models and techniques
  • Oversee and actively manage the breeding of transgenic mouse/rat colonies at an external contract research organization

Candidate Requirements
  • Apprenticeship as a lab technician in biology/biochemistry and/or Master degree in Science; specialized education in Neuroscience or Immunology as a plus; Researchers holding a PhD will generally not be considered because the advertised position has a strong focus on actual practical lab work
  • Theoretical knowledge and working experience of > 3 years in at least one of the following fields: Neuromuscular disorders, Lysosomal storage diseases, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease; candidates with a strong background in animal models of Psychiatry will also be considered
  • Solid hands on experience in rodent behavioural pharmacology (motor function and cognitive testing), stereotaxic surgery, brain, spinal cord or nerve dissections, ex vivo tissue analysis (e.g., Immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, qRT-PCR, ELISA)
  • Willingness to work with viral vector (AAV or lentivirus) technology
  • Strong drive to solve experimental challenges with an eye for technical details
  • Proven ability to independently perform, analyze and accurately document experiments
  • Flexible, pro-active and motivated to contribute to the development of novel drugs
  • Excellent knowledge of English (verbal and written), additional knowledge of French or German is considered a plus
  • Good communication skills in a multicultural environment
  • Previous experience in managing external contract research studies is considered an advantage
