Proteomics - Mass spectrometry

Our research team in the Experimental Ophthalmology Department of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz focuses on the pathogenesis of ocular pathologies, namely glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and dry eye syndrome. The major aim of our research is to develop potential diagnostic and prognostic options for improved clinical management of the ophthalmopathologies. We utilize state-of-the-art proteomics and antigen/ antibody microarray techniques for protein analysis and biomarker discovery in the serum and ocular fluids.
We are now looking for Bachelor-/Master students who are interested in working in the field of mass spectrometry/ proteomics and meet the following requirements:
Applicant requirements:
  • Highly motivated students in the field of Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or similar) with strong interest in fundamental research
  • Experience in mass spectrometric analysis is highly desirable but not required
  • Ability to work independently in a collaborative research environment
  • Excellent written and spoken knowledge of the English language is a must as the thesis is to be written in English
The Experimental Ophthalmology features a well-equipped protein-biochemistry laboratory with all conventional electrophoretic systems, as well as a state-of-the-art MS laboratory including a robot for sample enrichment with magnetic nanoparticles and an automated platform for sample preparation, MALDI-MS/MS and LC-ESI-MS/MS systems for protein profiling and biomarker identification. We offer a modern laboratory within our interdisciplinary working group and expertise.
