Our research team in the Experimental Ophthalmology Department of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz focuses on the pathogenesis of ocular pathologies, namely glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and dry eye syndrome. The major aim of our research is to develop potential diagnostic and prognostic options for improved clinical management of the ophthalmopathologies. We utilize state-of-the-art proteomics and antigen/ antibody microarray techniques for protein analysis and biomarker discovery in the serum and ocular fluids.
We are looking for Master or Diploma candidates who are interested in working in the field of mass spectrometry, basic proteomics and microarray analysis.

Projects offered include the following topic:
  • Analysis of autoantibody-reactivities against corneal proteins in patients with dry eye syndrome
  • Methods: 1D/2D-SDS-PAGE, Western-Blot, MALDI-TOF MS, bead-based immunoassays, Microarray-Analysis

Applicant requirements:
  • Highly motivated students in the field of Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or similar) with strong interest in fundamental research
  • Above-average academic qualification
  • Experience in microarray analysis is highly desirable but not required
  • Ability to work independently in a collaborative research environment
  • Language skills: German or English (fluent)
The Experimental Ophthalmology features a well-equipped protein-biochemistry laboratory with state-of-the-art Mass spectrometry and Microarray laboratory. We offer a modern laboratory within our interdisciplinary working group and expertise.
