Cell Biology / Neurobiology / Biochemistry -- Zellbiologie / Neurobiologie / Biochemie

Research opportunities for “summer students” / lab trainees (continuously at all times of the year). In order to give students the opportunity to gain experience in research, we welcome up to 3 trainees at a time in our research institute.

Prof. Dr. Britta Qualmann  &  Priv. Doz. Dr. Michael M. Kessels
Jena University Hospital - Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena
Institute for Biochemistry I
Nonnenplan 2-4

We are an internationally well-known laboratory and work at the cutting edge of science. The extensive range of methods we apply and the innovative field of cell biological and biochemical research, which we represent, should ensure that your time in our lab is will be a very interesting and stimulating experience.
Since we also care sincerely for an excellent atmosphere in our lab, your time with us should be characterized by the fun that science can be.

The aim of our research team is to gain a molecular understanding of how the actin cytoskeleton is interconnected to cellular membranes and membrane transport processes and to reveal the cell and developmental importance and mechanisms of such a functional cooperation.
In order to do so, we use a variety of modern methods of molecular biology, genetics, protein biochemistry and cell biology in our rebuilt and modern institute right in the city center (please check our recent publications in high-ranking international scientific journals for details).

Maximally, we welcome 3 summer students / lab trainees at a time. This ensures that there is intense scientific and personal care. We recommend joining our lab for at least 6-8 weeks (longer is preferred and leads to a higher chance that your application succeeds). This time ensures that
  • you will learn different techniques,
  • you will develop some independence and routine in your work,
  • you will experience the joy of actually having discovered something previously unknown, i.e. of advancing science.
Projects can usually be extended for subsequent Master or PhD theses. In the past, several of our trainees subsequently decided to join us and we are proud that all of them were very successful and that some are still with us.

Applicants should be students of Life Sciences (i.e. for example of Biology, Molecular Medicine or Biochemistry) and in the second half of their university education. In order to apply, please submit a Curriculum Vita and copies of your degrees earned (school & university) to
