Staff Scientist (NMR Facility Manager) f/m

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research has an opening for a
Staff Scientist (NMR Facility Manager) f/m
Available instrumentation
The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research hosts three spectrometers: 700 and 500 MHz spectrometers, both equipped with cryoprobe and autosampler, and a 600 MHz spectrometer with MAS equipment for both solid-state and solution-state applications. Users of the “Small Molecules NMR facility”, comprising the 700 and 500 MHz spectrometers, are groups of the HZI doing research in natural products isolation and organic synthesis.
The facility manager will support in-house users of the “Small Molecules NMR facility” and will be involved in their training (set-up of experiments, data analysis and interpretation, instrument maintenance, process optimization). He/she will work in close collaboration with facility users and participate in their projects. He/she will be responsible for the maintenance of the NMR spectrometers, for the implementation of state-of-the-art experiments necessary to elucidate the structure of natural products, for the optimization of analytical processes and of measurement time usage as well as for the implementation and upgrade of NMR-related software, including software for data analysis, structure calculations and modelling of small molecules. She/he will keep the facility up to date with the latest developments in the field of structure elucidation of natural products.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics or Biochemistry and extensive postdoctoral or professional experience in NMR spectroscopy of small molecules (preferentially fungal and bacterial natural products) with a strong background in both theoretical and practical aspects. Knowledge in both instrumentation hardware and applications (software, pulse programming, data analysis, structure calculations) is required.
The ideal candidate should have a proven record showing that he/she can elucidate the chemical structures of complex novel natural products independently.
Strong organizational and communication skills, genuine scientific interest in natural products and drug research, and a supportive, attitude along with the ability to interact with other scientists in an international environment are essential.
Qualified applicants with a disability will be given preference.
