A PhD position (doctoral student) (50%) is available at the Institute of Human Genetics (Department of Genomics, Life & Brain Center), University of Bonn Medical School, Germany.
The primary focus of our Department is the gene identification in complex diseases using high through-put genomics technologies (SNP-, expression- and methylation-arrays, next-generation-sequencing). The candidate will work on the identification and characterization of predisposing genetic factors contributing to the development of psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder where the research group has access to large patient cohorts and a successful long-term scientific interest. The focus of the PhD will be on the analysis of genetic risk factors contributing to the development of schizophrenia. The doctoral position is situated in a multidisciplinary project ‘Integrated understanding of causes and mechanisms in mental disorders (IntegraMent)’ which has commenced beginning of 2014 and which is financed through the German Ministry of Science and Education (BMBF) within the e:Med programme.
The successful candidate will be involved in the most up-to-date sequencing and genotyping technologies, methods to handle and analyze the data (bioinformatics workflow, filter software, data mining, polygenic and pathway analyses), and the follow-up of the findings.
We offer an excellent multidisciplinary team-oriented research environment with individual development opportunities, supported by collaborations with the Institute for Medical Biometry, Informatics and Epidemiology, other departments of the university and leading national / international research groups.

The position is starting November 1st 2014 or later and is considered to last 2 years, with the possibility of extension.

In today’s busy research environment, we are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented graduate candidate, who is committed and motivated to knowledge integration in modern molecular biology, genomics technologies and cutting edge research. Preferably the successful candidate has experience with molecular genetics techniques (DNA/RNA work, DNA sequencing/genotyping, PCR) and should hold a diploma or a master’s degree in biology, molecular biomedicine or a related subject. Fluency both in written and spoken English and German language is essential. Good skills in using computer programs (e.g. MS Office, MS Windows) are required. Knowledge in R, computer programming language and SPSS is beneficial.
The PhD position will be integrated into the THEME PhD Program of the University of Bonn Medical School. We offer supportive mentoring and a well-equipped laboratory. The successful candidate will be awarded a PhD. Salary will be according to the German salary scale TV-L E13.
