Department of Cardiology
The Department of Cardiology at the Universitätsklinikum Frankfurt offers the following position that is immediately available:
Doctoral (PhD) student Position
(E13 (65 %), 3 year PhD program)
We seek a highly motivated, creative and talented PhD student that is interested in molecular and cellular mechanisms of cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology within the Department of Cardiology (Head Prof. AM Zeiher) and the Institute of Cardiovascular Regeneration (Head: Prof. S Dimmeler).
Project description
Pericytes are highly abundant perivascular cells that have an essential role in proper organ function throughout the cardiovascular system but also in malignancy. However, their role in pathologic states in cardiovascular disease is poorly understood. Our goal is to unravel pericyte-specific responses upon pathological stimuli and to identify the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms.
The project will focus on 1) The role and function of pericytes under physiological and pathological conditions 2) Epigenetic gene regulation and the role of noncoding RNAs within pericytes in disease states such as ischemia.
Besides standard techniques commonly used in Cell and Molecular Biology, the project involves the use of methods including RNA deep sequencing, coculture models of various cell types, cardiac organotypic organ culture models, confocal and two photon microscopy, as well as in vivo (acute myocardial infarction) procedures.
Your profile
The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic team in a stimulating scientific environment within a renowned and excellent equipped cardiovascular research laboratory. As successful candidate you have a Master degree or Diploma in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology or a related discipline. We expect a strong motivation and a full commitment in driving research at an international competitive level. Experience in molecular and cell biology techniques are indispensable. Experience one of the following techniques is highly desirable: CRISPR/Cas cloning techniques, transgenic mouse models, acute myocardial infarction in the mouse in vivo, mouse echocardiography, FACS, CHIP, two photon imaging.
Submission of application
Please send your application including
  • A cover letter (max. 1.5 pages) with personal statement on previous scientific research, achievements, technical know-how and scientific aims
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Copies of your academic degrees
  • Contact details of two References

The position is divisible in general. The Goethe university promotes equal opportunities. Applications of female candidates are specifically encouraged. Applicants with disabilities are expressly encouraged to apply and will be treated preferably in case of equal qualifications and suitability.
