Doctoral Researcher Position / Characterization of the immediate early response of human dendritic cells to Candida albicans

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute – in cooperation with the Friedrich Schiller University and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology are offering an international graduate training program. The
International Leibniz Research School (ILRS Jena)

gives doctoral researchers the possibility to prepare for their PhD exam in an ambitious program providing excellent research conditions.
We invite applications for a
Doctoral Researcher Position (Ref.No. ILRS_06/2015)
Characterization of the immediate early response of human dendritic cells to Candida albicans

Upon infection the human pathogenic yeast Candida albicans is immediately attacked by host innate immune reactions. This project aims at elucidating the mechanisms of immune response of human dendritic cells to C. albicans . Upon infection Candida induces innate immune responses such as the complement system which subsequently activates and also modulates the following reactions of immune cells. How dendritic cells react in concert with human complement plasma proteins to Candida cells will be investigated in more detail. The characterization of this molecular and cellular interplay, on the level of single cells and molecules, will be carried out and developed into a specific reaction model. Of interest is also the crosstalk between the dendritic cells to combat a C. albicans infection.

The experimental procedures include biochemical, immunological, molecular as well as microbiological assays. Real time interaction of the dendritic cells with C. albicans will be followed by laser scanning microscopy. The data will provide insights into the specific immune functions of human dendritic cells and also into the evasion strategies developed by C. albicans .
