Natural Scientist - molecular biology and/or cell biology - PhD Position - Diabetic Neuropathy research

Two PhD positions
in the field of the Importance of Enzymatic Regulation of Methylglyoxal Metabolism in Diabetic Neuropathy (in part time, 65%)

are available (15.10.2014 till 30.6.2018) in the newly established CRC 1118 “Reactive Metabolites and diabetic complications” / project Fleming/Nawroth at the University Hospital Heidelberg.

The major aim of this project will be to establish how hyperglycaemia (either chronic or acute) can influence the balance between MG production and detoxification. Candidates for this project will be responsible for performing and collecting data from vitro experiments. They will determine the effect of acute and chronic glucose stimulation on cultured neurons and cardiac endothelial cells, delineate the effect of glucose on the key regulators of MG production and detoxification at the level of DNA, RNA and protein, and determine those proteins which are susceptible to modification by MG. Candidates for the project will also be responsible for performing and collecting data from vivo experiments. They will perform the functional testing, as well the neuropathological and biological and molecular analysis of tissue samples obtained from the mice models used in the study.

Profile of Candidate’s Qualification:
We are looking for highly motivated PhD students interested in Diabetic Neuropathy research, to perform competitive high quality scientific research in a stimulating environment. Potential Candidates should have a Masters Degree in Life Sciences acceptable to HBIGS and a strong background in molecular biology and/or cell biology. Previous experience in working with cell culture and molecular/cell biology techniques would be an advantage.

The appointed candidate will work in an internationally recognized, multidisciplinary research group. If you are interested, please send your application (CV, Motivation letter, Degree certificates) as single PDF file to Thomas.Fleming@med.uni-heidelberg.de before October 15, 2014.
