The DFG Research-Training Group GRK 1505/2 “Analysis and simulation of electric interactions between implants and biosystems (welisa)” is an interdisciplinary consortium of the University of Rostock’s Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering together with the same University’s Faculty of Natural Sciences and the University Medicine in Rostock. http://www.welisa.uni-rostock.de/
The school is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG).
We seek to fill an Open PhD Student Position on:
“In vitro characterization of implant surfaces that favor the adhesion of eucaryotic cells though not procaryotic cells”

(50% EG 13 TV-L for two years, with a possible prolongation for a third year;
targeted start date: as soon as possible)
The project aims at a better understanding of cell adhesion and growth processes on the surfaces of implants and how they can be biased in favor of somatic cells while discriminating against bacteria. Key issues of  the project
will be the in vitrodetection of cell-adhesion, the spreading and proliferation processes of cells on model surfaces and the search for surface modifications that help  avoid biofilm formation or which allow for the destruction of biofilms  in  the  long-term.  Straightforward  approaches  in  these  investigations  (surface  topology  modifications, electrochemical  techniques  and  the  application  of  electric  fields)  will  be  performed  in  combination  with  light, electron and atomic force microscopy.

Expected appointment requirements:
  • The preferred candidate should have a biophysical and/or microbiological background and hold a diploma or master degree in natural sciences (physics, biology or chemistry).
  • Knowledge of the English language is mandatory
  • A good command of the German language is required
We offer:
  • A diversified and challenging occupation at a university that is rich in tradition yet innovative, modern and at the same time family friendly. It is situated in a lively city on the Baltic coast.
  • Public sector employment (TV-L)
  • Pay grade 50% 13 TV-L/13
