Behavioural and molecular biologist; magnetic fields and polarized light sensing in the retina of migratory birds

We are looking for an experienced behavioural and molecular biologist with experience in immunohistochemistry, PCR, Western Blotting and bird retina neuroanatomy. The position will be filled first for 1 year with the possibility of prolongation for up to 5 years, but it is aimed at achieving a Ph.D. degree after ca. 3 years. The position is an integrated part of an AFOSR funded joint research project on light-dependent magnetic sensing between the University of Oldenburg and the University of Oxford. (see e.g. Nature 509: 353-356; Nature 461: 1274-1277; Curr. Opin. Neurobiol. 22, 343-352).

The candidate must have experience in the molecular techniques mentioned above, and it would be an advantage if the candidate has experience working with cryptochromes and would be familiar with behavioural experiments testing the orientation capabilities of migratory birds, e.g. in Emlen funnels. The candidate should be dedicated to scientific achievement and able to start work in Oldenburg on a relatively short notice.

Our group is located at the University of Oldenburg, Germany and are parts of several collaborative centres of excellence both nationally and internationally including the Research Training Group (RTG) “Molecular Basis of Sensory Biology”. These collaborations will give you access to a very wide range of superb modern equipment, techniques and expertise.
