The position will be financed by a DFG – CONICET (German Research Foundation – National Scientific and Technical Research Council) Project: “Genetic variation, cytotype associations and geographical parthenogenesis in the subtropical grass genus Paspalum”. We will analyze the nature of cytotype and genotype diversity in connection with reproductive syndromes and ploidy levels in South American natural populations of Paspalum species.

We expect a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology and very good skills in scientific English (oral and written); basic knowledge of Spanish is advantageous. The applicant should have a deep interest in evolutionary processes in plants (polyploidy, hybridity), a training in karyology and/or developmental biology of flowering plants, experience and enthusiasm for microscopy as well as availability to field trips and training stays in northern Argentina; experience in flow cytometry and genotyping methods is advantageous. We expect high motivation, creativity, a cooperative personality and integration into the research team.
We offer a PhD position for three years, scientific research with a highly motivated, international team, fully equipped laboratories, fluorescence and DIC microscopy, flow cytometry and other research facilities in the Department. Most of the research material is available and in cultivation. Our PhD program offers a comprehensive mentoring program, specific courses for plant evolution, developmental and reproductive biology, opportunities for conference presentations, gaining teaching experience, and further support for career development. Research stays and workshops in partner labs (University of Northeastern and University of Misiones in Argentina) are planned within the project.
The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply as they are underrepresented in this field. Disabled persons with equivalent aptitude will be favoured.
