PhD Position in Plant Molecular Biology: Heterotrimeric G-protein signaling in maize

Starting in October 2015, a PhD position in a research project analyzing heterotrimeric G-protein signaling in maize development will be available at the Biocenter Klein Flottbek (Department of Developmental Biology), University of Hamburg.
Heterotrimeric G-protein signaling controls a wide range of developmental and physiological processes, including stem cell proliferation and shoot growth. Work of the last decade has shown that G-protein signaling in plants does not follow the classical paradigm established in animal systems.
Our recent identification and characterization of the maize COMPACT PLANT 2 (CT2) gene, which encodes the Gα-subunit of the heterotrimeric G-protein, provides a unique and solid entry point to now analyze the underlying molecular mechanisms of heterotrimeric G-protein signaling in maize (http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v502/n7472/full/nature12583.html).
This project addresses the role of G-protein signaling during maize growth control and as such contributes to our understanding how plants in general and maize in particular, as one of the most important crops in the world, control shoot and inflorescence size.

Area(s) of Responsibility: Frequently used techniques in this project include diverse cloning strategies, molecular genetics, such as CRISPR/Cas9 induced mutations, protein localization experiments using fluorescent reporter lines, in vitro and in vivo protein/protein interaction studies including subsequent mass spectrometry.
Requirements: A master or diploma in biology or related fields is necessary. Applicants should be highly motivated to work in basic research. Experiences in plant molecular biology and/or plant genetics are of advantage.

Applicants will benefit from the highly interdisciplinary and international research environment at the Biozentrum Klein Flottbek (https://www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de/biozentrum-klein-flottbek.html). Salary is according to TV-L E13 (50%) and is available for initially three years.
