PhD position - Microbiology/Virology

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the Carl-von-Ossietzky University Oldenburg is a marine research center situated in Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven. The Paleomicrobiology group at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany invites applications for a
PhD graduate student position in the area of
microbiology or phage ecology
(Federal German pay rate 65% E13TV-L)
The appointment will be for two years with an extension to a third year (subject to the DFG granting), starting as soon as possible.
The project “Impact of salinity changes on viral production during the paleoenvironmental history of Baltic Sea sediments” deals with the investigation of the deep biosphere (deep viriosphere). Samples and enrichment cultures from deep sediments of the Baltic Sea were recovered in the frame of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). As only little is known about general characteristics of benthic viruses, in this project, viral production, decay, life modes and induction mechanisms will be investigated. Therefore, we will measure rates of viral production and further determine if salinity changes triggered the induction of prophages in the past. By analysing different sediment layers, enrichment cultures and isolates, it will be determined if this variation has influenced prokaryotic and viral communities’ structures. With this study, deeper insights into the impact of viruses on current subsurface communities and their role during the paleoenvironmental history of the Baltic Sea will be gained.
Applicants should hold a MSc in microbiology, virology, or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in aquatic virology, molecular phage characterisation (PFGE, RADP-PCR), and classical microbiology including the anaerobic cultivation of microorganisms.
