PhD position: Signaling networks controling cytomegalovirus latency and reactivation

Job announcement No. 76/2014

The research group “Immune Aging and Chronic Infections” of Prof. Dr. Luka Cicin-Sain at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig (Germany) is offering a

PhD position:  “Signaling networks controling cytomegalovirus latency and reactivation”

Project:
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a highly common opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed recipients of solid organ transplants. Viral reactivation from latency, rather than primary infection causes severe disease and mortality in these patients, but the regulation of viral gene expression in latency and reactivation remains incompletely understood. We have recently developed a robust in vitro model of CMV latency and validated its biological relevance in vivo. We propose to utilize this model to define the signaling pathways regulating viral latency. The work will be pursued in murine and human models of CMV latent infection. This will not allow to in vivo validating the key findings in murine models and translating them in experiments with the clinically relevant virus.

Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree/Diploma in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related field of life sciences
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an international team
  • A strong desire to do research with high self-motivation and enthusiasm
  • Hands-on experience in cell culture and in vivo is preferred
  • Applicants with experience in virology or immunology are particularly encouraged to apply

With equal professional qualification, severely disabled persons will be prioritized.
