PhD student position open at the Institute for Clinical Neurobiology, University Hospital, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg

This job ad is out of date. Find related Jobs here.

The Institute for Clinical Neurobiology seeks a PhD student for expanding our research on the cellular pathogenesis of motoneuron disorders. The central research focus of our group are molecular mechanisms that affect axon growth and plasticity in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the most common forms of motoneuron disease in children and adults.
The aim of our work is to validate new mouse- and patient-derived iPS cells in state-of-art cell culture models to study defects in signaling pathways for axon stabilization and maintenance. These cell culture models shall be used to characterize alterations in axonal RNA metabolism. For further information, see recent publications from our lab (Selvaraj et al. (2012) The Journal of cell biology 199:437-451, Saal et al. (2014) RNA 20:1789-1802).

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with good background in cell culture and neurobiology. The candidate will use molecular biology methods and advanced cell culture techniques for studying alterations in diseased neurons. Experience with mouse embryonic cell culture techniques is of advantage. The project profits from a strong cooperation and knowledge transfer between partner groups. The applicant will find a project which is well embedded in the research focus of our Institute. He/she will have access to a modern and well-equipped research facility, will work with already available mouse models, and will be supported by technical assistance.

Interested candidates should e-mail a CV, a brief statement of research interest, representative publications, and name two references.
