Biologist, Biochemist as Research Associate - Molecular design of improved production microalgae (m/f)

Pending funding, Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the project "Microalgae 2021: Molecular design of improved production microalgae" in accordance with § 28 (3) of Hamburg's Higher Education Act (HmbHG*). The position commences on 1.8.2015.
It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 39 hours per week.
The short-term nature of this contract is based upon § 2 of the Academic Short-Term Labor Contract Act (WissZeitVG). The term is fixed from 1.8.2015.

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates can also pur­sue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Area(s) of Responsibility:

The project „Microalgae 2021“ is carried out by an international research consortium of the Universities of Stavanger (Norway) and Hamburg (Germany) and the companies MicroA (Tananger, Norway, http://microa.no/) und EWOS Innovation (Norway, http://www.ewos.com) and is led by Prof. Dr. S. Reumann (Universities of Hamburg and Stavanger). The partners aim at increasing the productivity of microalgae (e.g. Phaeodactylum und Nannochloropsis) in synthe­sizing valuable bio-products such as omega-3 fatty acids and recombinant proteins (e.g. fish vaccines) using molecular biology tools and genetic engineering. In this postdoctoral project molecular methods for nuclear and plastid transformation shall be optimized and established, respectively, for the production strains of interest and recombinant model proteins and vac­cines be produced.


A university degree in a relevant subject plus doctorate. A PhD degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a closely related subject is prerequisite for employment. Experience in axenic microalgae culturing, protein expression in plants and bacteria as well as good theoretical and practical knowledge in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, genetics and bioinformatics are advantageous.
