Innovative Strategies for Crop Improvement
CEPLAS – Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences – from complex traits towards synthetic modules is a joint effort of Heinrich Heine University, University of Cologne, Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research and Forschungszentrum Jülich. Researchers of these institutions are pursuing innovative strategies for sustainable plant production.
CEPLAS holds a unique position within the German Excellence Initiative as the only cluster focussing exclusively on plant sciences. It applies a new approach driven by evolutionary analysis and synthetic biology. Based on this combination the following areas will be examined:
  • Annual and perennial life histories
  • Photosynthetic carbon conversion efficiency
  • Composition and function of the plant microbiome
  • Metabolic interactions between plants and microbes
What We Offer
Future candidates participate in the strcuctured, 2-year CEPLAS Postdoc Programme. The programme aims at providing our postdoctoral fellows with the best possible skills and expertise to allow them to achieve their personal career goals in all areas. Programme components are (scientific) training, mentoring, coaching and networking with industry.

We are looking for
talented, highly motivated applicants with a PhD degree and a master or diploma degree and a strong background in molecular plant sciences, genetics, quantitative biology, bioinfomatics or a related discipline.

We invite applications for the following projects:
  • Molecular-genetic analysis of differences in flowering control between annual and perennial plants
  • Using receptor kinase pathways to modify plant traits
  • Analysis of the genetic basis of tillering in barley
  • Developmental basis for asexual reproduction in Cardamine
  • Establishing a functional link between leaf development and C4 photosynthesis
  • Unravelling the functional relationship between leaf anatomy and photosynthesis by mutational and synthetic approaches
  • Transforming Arabidopsis plants towards C4 metabolism
  • Constructing mesophyll and bundle-sheath specific cis-regulatory modules for plant synthetic biology
  • Towards the establishment of synthetic symbiosis studying plant/endophyte interactions
  • Signatures of adaptation to biotrophy in root associated fungi: from saprotrophy to obligate biotrophy
  • Diversity and functional consequences of protists and oomycetes closely associated with Arabidopsis
  • Exploring the coordination of indole glucosinolate metabolism and ER body formation in plant fitness
  • MS based identification of secondary metabolites crucial for plant rhizobacteria interactions
  • Investigation of plant secondary metabolite regulons crucial in plant–microbe interactions

The place of employment varies by the respective research project. According to the applicant’s personal qualification he or she will be paid up to EG 13 TV-L (german civil service pay scale). Qualified candidates should send their applications (cover letter describing their qualifications and research interests, curriculum vitae, contact info of two references, transcripts) by indicating the number 48T14-3.1 no later than 18.12.2014 by e-mail as one single pdf-file to: bewerbung@ceplas.de.

All participating institutions are equal opportunity employers. Applications from women are expressly welcome. Women with comparable qualifications will receive particular consideration, unless another applicant displays compelling reasons to prefer this person. Applications from suitably qualified severely disabled persons or disabled persons regarded as being of equal status according to Book IX of the German Social Legal Code (SGB – Soziales Gesetzbuch) are encouraged. Disabled persons with equal qualifications will be given priority.
