Project: Biomarkers for Aspergillosis

Invasive aspergillosis is a life-threatening infection in certain patient groups, e.g. after stem cell transplantation. The high mortality rates associated with aspergillosis in these patients are at least partially caused by delayed onset of targeted therapy due to problems in early accurate diagnosis. The project aims to address this medical need by identifying potential biomarkers using murine models and mass spectroscopy, and validating potential biomarkers using clinical samples.

The project is part of the InfectoGnostics Research Campus (www.infectognostics-jena.de), a public-private partnership combining academic and industrial partners for the development of tailored solutions for quick, on-site analysis (point-of-care testing) in the diagnostics of infections, that fosters transdisciplinary collaborations. As a member of the Research Group Microbial Immunology, the successful candidate will furthermore be embedded in the academic setting of the HKI, one of the largest centers for infection biology of human pathogenic fungi worldwide.

We expect a PhD in Life Sciences (e.g. Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology). The applicant should have excellent communication and collaboration skills and should be able to supervise Master students and perform team-oriented as well as independent work. Practical experience in Mycology/Microbiology or Infection Biology is essential and experience in handling laboratory mice is highly advantageous.

We offer multifaceted scientific project with excellent technical facilities, a place in a young, committed team, as well as strong scientific collaborations. Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). The HKI is an equal opportunity employer. The position is available from spring 2015 for at least two years, extensions are possible.
