Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, translational, national and international collaborations.

Division
The research group of Professor Ute Römling conducts research in molecular analysis of biofilm formation of bacterial and fungal pathogens and the impact of biofilm formation on pathogen-host interaction.

We are now looking for an enthusiastic flexible person with a strong interest for molecular mycology/microbiology, who is able to work autonomously and in a team.

Duties
The aim of this project is molecular analysis of the mode of action of anti-biofilm molecules affecting Candida spp. and bacterial biofilm formation. The duties include management of whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of Candida spp. and bacterial genomes, whole genome transcriptional analysis of biofilms and genetic manipulation of genomes.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

The holder of this position is expected to have a strong background in manipulation of Candida genomes and is experienced in whole genome transcriptional analysis, shotgun sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of fungal genomes. Alternatively, the applicant has a similar experience in bacteria.

Well-documented expertise and experience in the field of molecular mycology/microbiology with a focus on biofilm formation as well as chemical biology and/or bioinformatics is required. Previous experience in working with Candida spp. and/or enterobacteria is very valuable. Basic skills in biochemistry and microscopy are an advantage. Experience in collaborative research and a high-quality publication record are important merits.

Excellent IT skills and oral/written communication skills in English are mandatory.  High social competence, good interpersonal skills, a good integration into the group and the willingness to collaborate within and outside of the research group are a prerequisite.

The employment is a temporary position, one year with the possibility for extension.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:
  • A cover letter with motivation
  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  • Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
  • Contact information for two references with information about the relation to the applicant.
