Research scientist – Marine Metabolomics
in the research unit Marine Natural Products Chemistry
Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate with clearly demonstrated expertise in marine metabolomics to join our Research Unit. The holder of this post will perform a range of analytical research tasks, using various methodologies, such as targeted metabolomics, non-targeted metabolomic profiling and metabolomic fingerprinting.
The present research foci of our group rest on 1. discovery of bioactive natural products and functional ingredients 2. marine metabolomics 3. chemical ecology. The holder of the post will participate in various projects related to these subjects and will develop strong competence in comparative metabolomics and marine environmental metabolomics on marine macro- and microorganisms. Interactions across a broad range of scientific disciplines with other research groups at GEOMAR and University of Kiel will be expected. The successful candidate will involve in supervision of postgraduate/undergraduate students, teaching and preparations of third-party funding proposals. Candidates with strong track records of accomplishment in terrestrial plant/microbe metabolomics are also encouraged to apply, provided they have sufficient skills and experience.
State-of-the-art chemical facilities are available in our laboratory, including DAD-ELSD-HPLC, DAD-MS-HPLC, LC-MS, HRMS-HPLC, GC-MS, FPLC, FCPC, spectral analytics and the related compound and spectral databases. The GEOMAR has full access to the Department of Chemistry and their high resolution NMR facilities. We are members of several excellence clusters, such as The Future Ocean and several international consortia.
Qualifications required:
•    A PhD on metabolomics of marine natural products or a related field
  • Demonstrated competence in analytical techniques for metabolomics by GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR and other relevant techniques
  • Proficiency in various databases
  • High competence in bioinformatics tools and statistical analyses for data analysis/treatment/standardization
  • Experience in writing publications, conference papers and research proposals
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Planning and organisational skills, prioritisation of multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines
  • Demonstrated project and laboratory management skills in multiple tasks
  • Capability of creative- and critical thinking, independent thought and experimentation, decision making, problem solving with discretion, self-motivation and curiosity
Hands-on experience on metabolomics analysis of multiple classes of natural products is advantageous. Scuba diving license and some marine collection experience and prior experience in purification and structure elucidation of new marine signalling metabolites by LC-MS and NMR are highly desirable.
This is a full-time position, starting 1st March 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The position cannot be split and is available for 3 years. Upon successful review, it can be made permanent. The salary depends on qualification up to the class 13 TVÖD of the German salary rate for public employees.
