Systems Biology of disease mechanisms in human heart failure and cardiomyopathies

We are offering a Postdoc position for a Bioinformatician at the University of Heidelberg, Department of Internal Medicine III, Cardiology.

The position in the “Division of Molecular Genetics” lead by Dr. Benjamin Meder, is part of the recently established “EpiGenome-Center Heidelberg”, located together with the Institute of Computational Cardiology of the University of Heidelberg. The group is also member of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) (www.dzhk.de) and is hosting state-of-the-art research platforms such as a Next-Generation-Sequencing- and Zebrafish-Core-Facilities, offering a unique scientific environment.

Background: Heart failure and cardiomyopathies are a major burden on public health in industrialized countries because they are associated with a markedly reduced life expectancy and quality of life. Molecular studies revealed several genes, proteins, and miRNAs to be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of the diseases. However, many disease mechanisms are still unknown, hindering a more individualized and effective care.

The aim of this project is to investigate the role of novel genes, epigenetic marks and miRNAs in the pathogenesis of primary and secondary heart failure and develop suitable targets for the development of diagnostic tests.

Our Motivation is to strengthen our existing data analysis team with a scientist having expertise in the field of (epi-) genomics. We already have various analysis pipelines for the different omics data (whole genome, whole exome,  mRNA-seq, miRNA-seq, methylation arrays) established on our six node linux cluster (72 cores, 288GB-RAM, 1,2 Petabyte storage) and are now seeking to expand our team with people experienced in single-omics as well as multi-omics approaches.

Profile of candidate‘s qualification:
Team-minded, creative. Background in bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput data.
We offer a highly interactive and well-equipped environment in a team with national and international partners, a broad spectrum of methods and a highly innovative topic.
The university intends to increase the number of women amongst its academic personnel and expressly encourages qualified women to apply. Preference will be given to disabled applicants with equal qualifications.
The deadline for the submission of the application is October 31st, 2014.
