Biologists for PhD. position on Aerodynamics and Flight Behavior of Insects

University of Rostock, Department of Animal Physiology

Ph.D. position on Aerodynamics and Flight Behavior of Insects

Application deadline: May 31th, 2016
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic Information
Ph.D. position for 3 years, starting July 1st, 2016 or later, salary at level 65% TV-L E13

Research topic
We seek a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate with interests in the Biology and Aerodynamics of flying animals. The aim of the Ph.D. project is to understand insect flight in turbulent environments. Ultimate goal of the project is to determine impacts, benefits and limitations of environmental turbulence on flight stability and energetic costs in flapping flight. The Ph.D. project is diverse and comprises studies on the biomechanics of insect wings, behavioural studies on freely flying animals, 3-dimensional kinematic reconstructions, and laser-based measurements of flow structures during flight.

The project is part of the ANR (France) and DFG (Germany) project network "AIFIT" (Aerodynamics of Insect Flight In Turbulent Flows) that consists of research groups at the University of Aix-Marseille, École Normale Supérieure (ENS) at Paris, TU Berlin, University of Kiel, and the University of Rostock, Germany. The candidate will be funded by the DFG and closely cooperate with a doctoral student at Aix-Marseille University and a postdoctoral fellow at ENS and TU Berlin.

Location
The position is offered by the Department of Animal Physiology at the University of Rostock, Germany. The department resides in a modern, state-of-the-art building together with several biological work groups and close to the Departments of Engineering and Electrical Sciences. The lab has an internationally recognized expertise on the Biology and Aerodynamics of flying insects and features several unique equipment for biological flow quantification. Rostock is a lovely, mid-sized town located near the Baltic Sea. It features moderate ambient temperature and offers many opportunities for recreation including swimming, sailing, and hiking.
