The Doctoral Programmes consist of an experimental project combined with a three-year interdisciplinary graduate course curriculum leading to a dissertation. Each doctoral researcher will be supervised by two professors from different faculties and will benefit from our Doctoral Development Programme. Seminars and courses are conducted in English; German language courses are offered for international students. Depending on the project selected and own qualifications, doctoral researches will receive a stipend and be eligible to register for one of the doctoral degrees offered at the Justus Liebig University Giessen.
Activities and responsibilitiesMitochondria play fundamental roles in the energy balance, homeostasis and death of cells, and thereby have also impact on cardiac function. Mitochondrial function may be differently affected by cardiac diseases and in the various cardiac cell types. Therefore, it will be the aim of this project to characterize mitochondrial function in diverse cardiac cell types. Endothelial cells, fibroblasts and cardiomyocytes will be isolated from rodent hearts, and isolation of intact mitochondria from these cell will be established. Mitochondrial function will be determined by polarographic or fluorescent measurement of oxygen consumption and ROS, calcium retention capacity, analysis of mRNA and protein expression patterns, as well as intramitochondrial protein-protein interactions. These parameters will be compared in mitochondria from healthy animals and animals with heart failure or myocardial infarction. With this approach we will be able to differentiate the influence of mitochondria in different cardiac diseases.
Qualification profileThe applicant should hold a university degree in medicine, biology, biochemistry or veterinary medicine. She/he should have molecular biological knowledge. Experience in cell culture and teaching would be desirable.

We have different models of heart failure, myocardial infarction, cardiac hypertrophy and apoptosis, either using in vivo animal models , ex vivo Langendorff perfusion or cardiac cell cultures. Echocardiography and ECG recordings are established for determination of cardiac function in vivo. Molecular tools are applied to analyse altered cellular signaling pathways and mitochondrial function. These appraoches enable detection of new pathogenic pathways in the fight against cardiac diseases.
