Master thesis: Neurodegenerative diseases of the retina

The Experimental Eye Research Institute at the Ruhr-University Bochum is part of the University Eye Clinic Bochum. The lab focuses experimental basic research in the field of ophthalmology. Mechanical processes, ischemic damage, excitotoxicity, and immunological processes play a decisive part in the pathophysiology of several eye diseases like glaucoma or retinal ischemia. Therefore, current research subjects of our lab are the identification and investigation of cell death mechanisms which contribute to the disease progressions as well as the testing of innovative therapeutic agents.
The project is based on well-established animal models which are used to induce retinal ganglion cells death and axonal degeneration.
Subsequent to these in vivo studies and within the framework of the master thesis the extend of retina and optic nerve damage should be analyzed and the underlying mechanisms (contribution of immune cells, cell death mechanisms..) should be identified.
Immunohistochemistry, protein biochemistry (Western Blot and ELISA) and molecular biology (qRT-PCR).
A great amount of motivation and patience as well as independent working are necessary for a successful completion of the planed experiments.
Previous knowledge of immnohistochemistry and/or protein analyses are welcomed.
We offer:
A fully-equipped, modern lab; careful familiarization as well as an excellent support in all parts of the master thesis
