Natural Scientist as Junior Research Group Leader - Parasitology (m/f/d)

In the Department of Nutritional Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Environmental Management, in the externally funded project Novel Drug Targets against Poverty-Related and Neglected Tropical Infectious Diseases (DRUID), the following full-time position is available, starting June 1, 2019 and ending on December 31, 2022:

Junior Research Group Leader

If all mandatory requirements are met, the applicant’s salary will be set at Pay Grade 14 according to the Hessian Labor Contract (Entgeltgruppe 14, TV-E).

The aforementioned junior research group is an integral part of DRUID, a newly established research center funded by Hessen as part of their Statewide Initiative to Develop Academic–Economic Excellence (LandesOffensive zur Entwicklung Wissenschaftlich-ökonomischer Exzellenz—LOEWE). The candidate must be able to collaborate with the interdisciplinary LOEWE Center partners (the Universities of Giessen, Marburg, and Frankfurt, as well as the Paul Ehrlich Institute in Langen and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen).

Principal duties:

  • Establish an independent junior research group in the field of parasitology.
  • Characterize new target molecules using the most current methods of biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology.
  • Participate in the main activities of the LOEWE Center.
  • Lead the junior research team and project with a high level of autonomy.
  • Develop independent research and publication concepts.

Job requirements

The prospective jobholder should be an internationally qualified expert in the field of parasitology (single-cell and/or multi-cell parasites) and possess the following qualifications:
  • A college degree, an outstanding doctoral dissertation, and several years of experience working in the field of infection research
  • Publications in respected international academic journals
  • Successful acquisition of external funding and leadership of externally funded projects
Experience in international collaborations is also desired.
