Starting from July, 1st 2016 a PhD position (payment according to TV-L E13, 50%) is available in the context of a newly granted DFG-funded project in the group of Prof. Dr. V. Lessmann at the Institute of Physiology, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany.

In the project we want to analyze the role of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and dopamine in hippocampal synaptic plasticity using physiologically relevant spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) stimulation patterns at the single cell level (Edelmann et al., Neuropharmacology 2014, Edelmann et al., Neuron 2015). We will apply a combined approach of patch clamp recordings, pharmacology, optogenetics and calcium imaging methods. In addition, different immunohistochemical and molecular biological methods will be employed.

We offer intensive training and supervision by our experienced team, the opportunity to attend national and international conferences and a diverse state-of-the-art working environment with a variety of established methods in electrophysiology, behavior, live-cell imaging, molecular biology, and cell culture; embedded in a well-established European network.

We are looking for a highly motivated team member with a solid background in neuroscience (e.g., long-term potentiation, synaptic transmission) and a great interest in performing electrophysiological experiments and optogenetics. Experience in electrophysiology (especially patch clamp recordings) would be beneficial, but is not a strict prerequisite.

Applicants should hold a Diploma or equivalent Master degree in Biology, Neuroscience or a related field and should send their CV, a brief summary of their Diploma or master thesis, Diploma/Master certificate and two letters of reference (or contact info of two referees) to Volkmar Lessmann (lessmann@med.ovgu.de)
