The Center for Cardiovascular Research, located in central Berlin at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin Campus Mitte, is inviting for applications for a Ph.D.-position, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), starting Autumn 2015. We seek enthusiastic and highly motivated Ph.D.-students to conduct translational research on inflammatory pathways in atherosclerosis.
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. It is expressed as a precursor transmembrane protein and subsequently converted into its soluble, bioactive form by TNF-alpha converting enzyme (TACE) mediated shedding. Recently discovered mediators were shown to modulate this pathway specifically in immune cells. Therefore, our project aims to target these mediators in atherosclerosis by experiments involving atherosclerotic mouse models (in vivo), immune cells (in vitro) and human atherosclerotic disease (translational).
The PHD thesis will include, but is not limited to transgenic mice, generation of bone-marrow chimeric mice, histology and immunohistochemistry, cell culture techniques (for example isolation of bone marrow derived macrophages), Western Blot, Realtime-PCR, ELISA, flow cytometry and sorting, in situ hybridization, cholesterol efflux assay.

Master (M.Sc.) degree, diploma or equivalent in natural sciences. Skills in molecular biology and cell biology are required. Knowledge in atherosclerosis and immunology as well as experience with transgenic mice is highly appreciated. Candidates should have an excellent command of written and spoken English. Besides strong motivation we expect the ability for teamwork, good communication skills and flexibility.

Salary will be according to German employment rules (E13, 65%), funded by the DFG.
The contract is offered for three years starting Autumn 2015.
