This part-time appointment ( 50-65% ) will be available immediately with a contract for at least  24 months.

The University Medical Center Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is ranked as a leading research institution of Germany having a strong immunology program. Our laboratory (PD Dr. med. Objectives of the PhD candidate program are to create an attractive environment for basic & clinical research, improved career opportunities for young researchers and high-quality in patient-oriented research.

Your tasks:

  • Surgical mouse models of experimental sepsis (cecal ligation & puncture) and acute lung injury (e.g. intra-tracheal injections) will be employed
  • Complex mouse breeding strategies (cre-lox system) and generation of bone-marrow chimeric mice will be performed
  • Cell culture techniques (isolation of macrophages, neutrophils, platelets) as well as flow cytometry, RT-PCR, ChIP assays, ELISA, Western blotting, bead-based assays, platelet aggregometry, transfections / lentiviral transductions, histology, immunostainings, intra-vital microscopy, massive parallel sequencing (RNA-Seq.) technologies and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing may be performed

Your profile:

  • M.Sc. or diploma degree in a relevant field is required
  • Highly motivated individual to promote our experimental studies on the molecular interactions of inflammation and coagulation (e.g. host-pathogen interactions)
  • Special areas of interest are the role of novel pathogen-associated molecular patterns, macrophages, neutrophils, platelets, cytokines (IL-27) and the complement system (C5a, C5aR1, C5aR2)
  • Publication of research results in international journals is strongly expected
  • Strong background in Immunology, Molecular Biology and/or Hemostaseology is preferred
  • Ability in initiating, conducting, evaluating and reporting of research studies is essential

We offer:

  • Excellent training and career opportunities
  • PhD projects for a duration of 3-4 years (E13, 50-65%)
  • Projects dedicated to elucidate the pathophysiology of innate and adaptive immunity in the context of sepsis and acute lung injury (ALI/ARDS)
  • Tailored projects to meet the individual qualifications and interests of the PhD applicant (for example: the nature and extent of molecular biology techniques, immunology methods or a focus on surgical mouse models)
  • Basic and translational research projects will provide opportunities to learn state-of-the-art techniques in immunology, molecular biology and hemostaseology
  • The opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary and highly motivated team of scientists and clinicians
  • An application for the Doctoral Candidate Fellowship Program of the CTH and/or the Mainz Research School of Translational Biomedicine (TransMed Graduiertenkolleg) can be discussed
