A PhD position will open as of October 1st 2016 in the Department of Cellular Biochemistry of the University Medical Center Göttingen (Germany) in the lab of Ricarda Richter-Dennerlein for the study of the assembly pathway of the mammalian mitochondrial ribosome.
Mitochondria, which fulfill many essential roles within the cell, still contain their own genome (mtDNA). However, the expression of mtDNA-encoded proteins depends on factors encoded by the nuclear genome. Defects in these factors lead to severe mitochondrial diseases in human. This is also true for the mitochondrial ribosomal proteins, which need to be imported into mitochondria, where they assemble with mtDNA-encoded ribosomal RNAs.
We are interested in how the mammalian mitochondrial ribosome is built together with components of dual genetic origin. Our analyses will also help us to understand the diverse clinical presentation of the growing group of patients with mutations in genes encoding for mitochondrial ribosomal proteins.
Highly motivated, creative students with an interest in molecular biology and biochemistry, and good communication skills in English are encouraged to apply. We provide the opportunity to undertake projects with a broad range of techniques in the well-established laboratories in the Department of Cellular Biochemistry (headed by Prof. Peter Rehling) and to be integrated into the international research campus in Göttingen.
If you are interested in joining our young enthusiastic group or if you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact Ricarda Richter-Dennerlein.
