PhD position in the field of microbial ecology of the fowl gastrointestinal tract

The group “Livestock Microbial Ecology” at Institute of Animal Science in Hohenheim, Germany offers a PhD position in the microbial ecology of the fowl gastrointestinal tract.

Activities and responsibilities

The project aims to characterize the phylogenetic and functional diversity of the microbiota in the digestive tract of quails and laying hens and is part of the DFG FOR2016: “Inositol phosphates and myo-inositol in the domestic fowl: Exploring the interface of genetics, physiology, microbiome, and nutrition”. The overall aim is to understand the fundamental principles of microbe-host interactions and the composition and function of the intestinal microbiota in laying hens and quails with special focus on the impact of InsP6 degradation products in intestinal microbiota.

Qualification profile

Candidate profile:
  • You hold a master degree in microbiology, bioinformatics or agricultural biology/science or another field relevant to the topic
  • You should have knowledge or be interested in:
  • Molecular biology methods
  • (16S) sequencing, metaproteomics, metatranscriptomics and bioinformatics
  • You should be motivated to learn different techniques, and flexible to work
  • You should have good communication and writing skills in English.

The place of work is at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level EG 13 TV-L, 0.5. Funding is available for 36 months.
