Dendritic cells play crucial roles in host defense, immune regulation and tissue homeostasis. We aim to understand the developmental pathways of these cells and determine to what extent cellular functions are established during ontogeny or influenced by the specific local tissue environment.

The focus of the funded project is to study the organ-specific functions of dendritic cells and understand the contribution of dendritic cells to innate host defense against fungal and bacterial pathogens. Additionally, we want to assess the role of dendritic cells during immune responses induced by tissue injury. We will make use of novel mouse models allowing for the visualisation of dendritic cells by fluorescent markers, as well as selective genetic manipulation and targeted ablation of dendritic cell subsets. In parallel, systematic phenotypic, transcriptional and functional analyses of mononuclear phagocytes from human primary tissue will be carried out to assess if similar functional subsets exist in human pathologies.
