PhD position - Structural Biology of Biosynthetic Enzymes

The Helmholtz-Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) was founded by the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) and Saarland University in August 2009. Its mission is the discovery of new pharmaceuticals and the development of new therapies to fight infectious diseases. The work includes strategies to optimize the producers of natural compounds and the compounds themselves as well as improved transport of novel drugs to their targets. In 2015 the HIPS moved to its newly constructed premises on the University’s campus.
The Emmy Noether Junior Research Group Structural Biology of Biosynthetic Enzymes located at the HIPS has the following position available immediately:

PhD position

The research project encompasses areas of structural and chemical biology with the aim to elucidate bottromycin biosynthesis using biochemical techniques and protein crystallography. Bottromycins are potent antimicrobials with activity against gram-positive bacteria including MRSA and VRE. The biochemical and structural data will be used in innovative biotechnological approaches to produce bottromycin variants with improved pharmacological properties. Parts of the biosynthetic machinery will be used to generate unrelated compound classes. Methods will include standard molecular biological techniques, biochemistry (Development of new assays for e.g. NMR and SPR) and protein crystallography (starting with construct design, expression, purification all the way to structure analysis). Previous experience in these areas is welcome but not required.

You are a highly motivated individual with a desire to be responsible for an independent project while working in an international, interdisciplinary and supportive environment. You have a Master’s degree/Diploma in Biochemistry, Chemistry, MedChem, Biology or related subjects with above average grades.

Our offer:
We offer an attractive and manifold position in the area of pharmaceutical research and the possibility to learn cutting-edge techniques in an interdisciplinary environment of chemists, biologist and medicinal chemists. Hiring will be conducted by the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, but the place of work is Saarbrücken.

Qualified applicants with a disability will be given preference.
