The Tumor Biology research group at the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Würzburg, is seeking a PhD candidate to work on the project with the title “Investigating the role of novel and established driver mutations for malignancy and intratumoral heterogeneity in melanoma”.
 
Malignant melanoma belongs to the tumors with the highest somatic mutation frequency, and a large number of genomic alterations have been identified in this tumor entity. Still, the significance and potential pro-tumorigenic function of the respective mutations are mostly inscrutable. Aim of the project is to characterize melanoma relevant mutations, which were carefully chosen in a previous selection process, with respect to their malignant potential. Specifically, their roles as oncogene or tumor suppressor, their ability to influence critical signaling pathways, their effect on migration and invasion and the sensitivity towards clinically relevant inhibitors will be analyzed.
