PhD Project

Workscope: Research Associate
The research group for Neurodegeneration and Cell Physiology in the Department of Neurology at Hannover Medical School is searching for a PhD student to start the project
Development of novel treatment strategies for Parkinson’s disease using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells and functional analyses of differentiated neurons
In contrast to the use of human embryonic stem cells, there are no ethical concerns regarding the molecular reprogramming of human cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). In cooperation with the Harvard Medical School we established multiple iPSC lines derived from sporadic and mutant LRRK2 Parkinson patients. These iPSC lines shall be differentiated into dopaminergic neurons and compared to healthy and isogenic control lines using patch-clamp electrophysiology, calcium imaging, quantitative RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry in order to gain insight into the pathophysiology and develop novel treatment strategies.
The latest starting date for this PhD project is April 2017. The employment will be arranged by the administrator of the Department of Neurology, Hannover Medical School and the Center of Systemic Neuroscience Hannover (ZSN). The ZSN is designed to contribute substantially to the training of young scientists in the fields of systems neuroscience and to provide skills students will need for a successful research career.
Applicants must have successfully completed a university degree in medicine, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or in another field of the life sciences. Disabled persons will be preferred in case of equal qualifications.
