PhD Student Position: Biochemistry of Exercise in Diabetes Prevention

PhD Student Position: Molecular Mechanisms of Diabetes Prevention by Exercise

PhD Student Position (65% E13),
Molecular Diabetology,
Medical Clinic Tübingen and Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) of the Helmholtz Center at the University of Tübingen. The IDM is partner of the German Center of Diabetes Research (DZD).

Job description:
We are interested in the mechanisms responsible for the effectiveness of exercise to prevent type 2 diabetes focussing on molecular and cellular adaptations in muscle and liver. The project is integrated in a translational project at the Medical Clinic and the IDM in Tübingen. The focus is on mechanistic studies in primary muscle cells, comprehensive metabolomics/transcriptomics/proteomics analyses of plasma, tissue and cell culture samples, and exercise training studies.

Your profile:
Join our team if you are highly motivated to investigate molecular principles of metabolic regulation and if you are fascinated by the biochemistry of exercise. You have a master’s degree in Biochemistry or a related field, and you have practical experience in cell culture techniques. A strong background in any of the following techniques is preferred: Transcriptomics/metabolomics/proteomics, RNA interference, cell respirometry, molecular and cellular imaging.
You enjoy being part of a team but you can work independently.

What we can offer:
  • Personal mentoring in a multidisciplinary team (biochemistry, biology, medicine)
  • A wide range of modern methods including various “omics”-analysis, high resolution respirometry, mouse exercise studies (optional), and working with human primary material
  • Further training opportunities and participation in the training and education program of the DZD

The suggested starting date is February 1st, 2017
