The Department of Medicine II of the Technical University of Munich invites applications for two ERC-funded
PhD Student positions in Cancer Genetics/Biology
Description: We are deploying genetic models to study molecular and translational aspects of solid tumors. One focus in the past few years was the development of novel systems for genetic target identification and validation in mice. We utilize these systems to uncover molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development, metastatic spread and treatment resistance in vivo (e.g. Nat Med. 2014, 20:1340-7; Cancer Cell. 2013, 23:406-20; Nat Protoc. 2012, 7:1167-83). We are also performing genetic screening (CRISPR/Cas9; transposons) in vitro and in vivo, including drug resistance screens in cancer cells (e.g. Nat Genet. 2015, 47:47-56). In separate approaches we are developing specific genetic models to perform in depth analysis of gene function and to address diagnostic/therapeutic questions (e.g. Cancer Cell. 2013, 24:15-29; Nat Commun. 2013;4:1630; PNAS 2011, 108:9945-50).
We are a young, enthusiastic team and offer intensive training and mentoring. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn a wide spectrum of genetic, molecular biology, biochemical and cell biology techniques. She/he will be exposed to cutting edge methods to study translational aspects of cancer (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9, dual and triple-recombinase systems and next-generation sequencing). She/he will also be able to gain insights into clinically relevant aspects of cancer development through proximity to the clinical facilities and through the interdisciplinary composition of our team and closely collaborating groups.
Your profile: We are looking for self-motivated individuals with a Diploma or Masters degree in biochemistry, biology or related subjects. Previous exposure to and experience with basic biochemical and molecular biology techniques as well interests in molecular aspects of cancer research is essential.
Payment is according to tarif (TV-L). We give priority to severely disabled applicants with essentially equal qualifications.
