Postdoc fellowship in Molecular Infection Biology

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig offers a
Postdoc fellowship in Molecular Infection Biology
Molecular mechanisms governing heterogeneous virulence gene expression during Yersinia infections
in the lab of Petra Dersch in the Department of Molecular Infection Biology (
The group studies molecular mechanisms controlling virulence gene expression, utilizing the intestinal pathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis as a model pathogen. Focus is on mechanisms underlying temperature- or nutrient-responsive phenotypic heterogeneity/bistability of crucial virulence regulators and pathogenicity factors, and the role of phenotypic variations for pathogenesis and fitness of the pathogen during infection. The project is primarily focused on (i) the analysis of the spatial-temporal distribution of subpopulations that differ in their gene expression profile, (ii) identification of the biological functions, which are differentially expressed in the subpopulations, and (iii) the role of post-transcriptional control mechanisms, e.g. non-coding RNAs in formation bistable systems.
Applicants must hold a PhD in the field of molecular biology or infection biology at the time of recruitment. Candidates should have a true interest in science and be willing to take on scientific and technical challenges. Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology, microbiology in particular bacterial pathogens/infection biology is highly desirable and experience from previous experimental work with mouse infection models as well as experiences from analyzing RNAseq data are considered as particular merits. Applicants need to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English. Candidates should be able to work independently and in collaboration with others with design and analyses of experiments, present own research and write papers.
The selected candidate will have access to all the Facilities at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research, and may help supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
The HZI is a research centre under the roof of the Helmholtz Society, which is a world leading and powerful institution funding basic and applied research in natural sciences. HZI is narrowly connected to the Technical University of Braunschweig and the University of Hannover and is, thus, embedded in a dense environment of fundamental research in Biology and Immunology. The HZI has proven in the past to provide excellent support for the appointed scientists in order to promote their career.
