The initial appointment will be for 3 years starting December 1, 2019. Continued employment following the fixed term is possible.

Activities and responsibilities

The ISEF laboratory ( www.isef-luebeck.de) is interested in the biology of the complement system. A particular focus is on the multiple functions of the small cleavage fragments of C3 and C5, i.e. the anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a, in the networks of innate and adaptive immune responses. This project focuses on the role of C5a as a regulator of the inflammatory response in Gaucher disease, the most frequent lysosomal storage disease. Recently, we uncovered an unexpected link between the C5a/C5aR1 axis and the accumulation of glucosylceramide in experimental and clinical Gaucher disease (Pandey et al. Nature 2017). The laboratory uses cutting-edge molecular, cellular, immunological and transgenic techniques (Karsten et al. J. Immunol. 2015, 2017; Quell et al. J. Immunol. 2017) in a highly motivating environment.

Qualification profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified candidate with strong interest and background in immunology. Requirements include a PhD degree (or equivalent) with excellent grades in biology, biochemistry or related sciences. Prior experience with mouse models of inflammation is desired including the qualification for animal handling (FELASA). Preference will be given to candidates experienced in isolation and purification of immune cells and their phenotypic characterization by flow cytometry. The ideal candidate has excellent organization, communication, analytical and team player skills and shares with us our big passion for science. Due to the strong international ties of the laboratory (www.irtg1911.uni-luebeck.de), solid command of the English language is essential.

We offer

This is a fixed-term position for 3 years, with the possibility of extension. Weekly working time is 100% of a full-time position (currently 38,5 hours per week). Part-time employment is also possible. Salary will be, depending on qualifications, according to the German salary scale 13 TV-L. The preferred starting date is December 1st 2019.
