Research Assistant

A 3-year PhD position as part of a DFG-funded project is offered to study the molecular mechanisms underlying the maturation of NiFe-hydrogenases. These enzymes allow bacteria to produce or utilize molecular hydrogen as an energy source. The project will involve the molecular characterization of the HypD protein, an metalloenzyme predicted to have novel biochemical activity. The project is part of a new Research Initiative aimed at understanding the role of iron-sulphur clusters in the evolution of life. The student will be expected to present his or her research findings at annual joint group meetings within the Research Initiative. Furthermore, the candidate will be involved in student training and writing of scientific reports.
Salary: 65% TV-L13
This position is available for 3 years in the first instance and the intended start date is 01/08/2016.
We are looking for a highly motivated biochemist/microbiologist or similar with a University degree and qualified to the level of Master of Science. The candidate should have experience in molecular biology and protein chemistry and, ideally, also have some experience in anaerobic techniques, and/or protein purification and enzyme assay. Furthermore, the candidate should be able to communicate in English. The candidate should be capable of working as part of a team, but the ability to plan and work independently is expected.
