SB (FWO) application in Plant proteins that assist in viral replication

Project
The project aims to establish a proof of concept for a novel strategy to identify plant proteins that physically interact with viral genomes and are required for viral replication and spread. This strategy uses a newly established UV cross-linking protocol to specifically induce covalent bonds between viral (RNA) genomes and host plant proteins in vivo. Subsequent highly specific probe-based isolation of viral RNA - protein complexes will allow the identification of the cross-linked plant peptides using mass spectrometry. After validation of the viral RNA - plant protein interaction in living plant cells and the subsequent assessment of a role of the plant protein in assisting viral replication, the interaction will be disrupted through targeted mutations in the corresponding plant genes. The proposed procedure could be expected to identify dominant plant genes with a function in virus susceptibility. Corresponding recessive alleles may provide allelic sources of resistance that do not affect the biochemical function in the plant. Modified plants will be phenotyped for increased virus tolerance/resistance and general performance. 

Profile
We will fund the student for three months to apply for a competitive SB (FWO) scholarship. This requires a thoroughly prepared proposal, great communicative skills and strong motivation. A formal requirement is that you graduated with distinction in a masters program relevant for the application and that you have a EU passport.
