Visiting Scientist in CRISPR/Cas9 Protein Engineering (m/f)

Your tasks and responsibilities

One of a kind opportunity to drive the cutting edge of one of the hottest technology developments in science. Through its recent formation of a CRISPR/Cas9 joint venture with CRISPR Therapeutics, Inc., Bayer Pharma AG has established its commitment to the development of genome editing approaches to human gene therapies (http://www.news.bayer.de/baynews/baynews.nsf/id/2015-0425-e). Further strengthen the Cas9 engineering team at Bayer’s center of excellence for protein engineering in Cologne, Germany. We expect that these three-year positions will provide opportunities for publications, patent applications and conference presentations - and to establish, solidify or expand your credentials as a protein engineer and CRISPR/Cas9 expert with industrial experience.   • Engineer safer and more effective gene therapy nuclease enzymes
  • Apply your creativity, skills and experience within dynamic protein engineering teams including molecular biologists, biochemists and high-throughput screening experts at our protein engineering expertise center in Cologne, Germany
  • Develop and implement miniaturized assays for Cas9 protein engineering and characterization, including molecular biological, biochemical and/or cell-based assays
  • Exploit bacterial, yeast and/or mammalian systems for miniaturized high-throughput selections and screens

Who you are

  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology or similar discipline with post-doctoral research experience and an excellent track record of productivity
  • Extensive hands on experience in biochemical or DNA-based assay development
  • Advantageous is expertise in: cell-based, FACS-based or DNA-based assay development (e.g., DNA cleavage assays); enzyme kinetics; sophisticated DNA cloning or manipulation methods; NGS and complex data set analysis (e.g., in R); in-depth analysis of protein structures; rational or other protein engineering methods
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork, outstanding analytical thinking
  • Curiosity and passion for research
  • Business fluent in English, both written and spoken
