About us
ZIEL is a central institute within TU Munich, located at the Weihenstephan School of Life Science in Freising. You will be part of the ZIEL Research Unit Microbiome/NGS, which studies the diversity of mammalian intestinal bacteria and aims at clarifying their role in the regulation of host physiology.

Your profile
We look for two highly motivated candidates with a Master of Science or equivalent who are eager to carry out a PhD project in academic research.
Position 1: You will explore the diversity and functions of bacterial strains from the mouse intestine using culture and molecular techniques, including the use of model communities in vitro and in mouse models. Expertise in microbiology or microbial ecology and the willingness to handle laboratory mice. Experience in anaerobic cultivation of bacteria is a plus. Excellent speaking and writing skills in German and at least good knowledge of English are expected.
Position 2: You will be responsible for the development of existing collections of bacterial strains from the mammalian intestine (primarily human), and will study their diversity and functions via bioanalytical and sequencing methods. You are either a trained microbiologist with good computing skills, or a computer scientists with a strong interest in carrying out experimental work. Experience in microbial ecology of the human gut and/or genome analysis or comparative genomics would be a plus. Excellent knowledge of English is mandatory. Good knowledge of German would be a plus.
