11 PhD Positions in Neuroscience on "Adipocyte-Brain Crosstalk", University of Lübeck, Germany

Research Projects
The DFG-funded Graduiertenkolleg 1957 studies the effects of adipose tissue hormones on CNS function and in turn, the control of adipose tissue physiology by the brain. We are looking for highly motivated candidates for the following PhD projects. Tentative start: May 2017.
  • Identification of leptin transporters at the blood-brain barrier (supervisor: Markus Schwaninger)
  • Effect of adipokines/cytokines on HIF-1 regulated astrocyte glucose metabolism (Olaf Jöhren)
  • Relevance of central TRH neurons for regulation of fat browning and brown adipose tissue activity (Helge Müller-Fielitz & Markus Schwaninger)
  • Adipocyte-brain communication after deep brain stimulation (Norbert Brüggemann & Britta Wilms)
  • Crosstalk of dopamine and thyroid hormone signaling in the control of thermogenic adipose tissue (Jens Mittag & Alexander Iwen)
  • Circadian regulation of brown adipose tissue activity in humans (Sebastian Schmid)
  • A systems level approach to modulation of adipocyte-brain crosstalk by transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (Thomas Münte & Swantje Brede)
  • Nesfatin-1’s effects on energy homeostasis: dissecting the role of PVN and NTS oxytocin neurons (Hendrik Lehnert & Carla Schulz)
  • Epigenetic modulation of behavioral rhythms after bariatric surgery (Henriette Kirchner & Henrik Oster)
  • Adipokine regulation of circadian clocks in hypothalamic neurons (Henrik Oster)
  • Animal models of obesity/diabetes: Influence of the angiotensin system on neurovascular coupling and memory formation (Walter Raasch & Michael Bader)

Our Offer
  • 3-year employment contract, salaries according to German civil service tariff TV-L 13, 65%
  • All research groups are located at the Center of Brain, Behavior and Metabolism (CBBM) with state-of-the-art lab facilities incl. MRT scanner, metabolic core unit, LC-MS, microscopy
  • Comprehensive academic support, e.g. subject-specific courses, skills training, funding for research stays abroad, individual career coaching

  • Research-based master's degree or equivalent (e.g. diploma) passed with an above-average grade in natural sciences, preferably in biology, molecular life science, neuroscience, nutrition & biomedicine, pharmacology or a related subject
  • Excellent English language skills in speaking and writing
  • Pro-active attitude, good communication skills and ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team

About University of Lübeck

Welcome at the GRK1957 "Adipocyte-Brain Crosstalk"Our DFG funded  Graduiertenkolleg 1957  offers focused research projects and a structured training programme. In an interdisciplinary research approach we address the effects of hormones derived from adipose tissue (adipokines) on CNS function and, in turn, the control of adipose tissue and body weight by the brain. ...
