Our research team in the Experimental Ophthalmology Department of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz focuses on the pathogenesis of ocular pathologies, namely glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and dry eye syndrome. The major aim of our research is to develop potential diagnostic and prognostic options for improved clinical management of the different ophthalmopathologies. We provide state-of-the-art proteomics and antigen/antibody microarray technologies, modern cell culture laboratory facilities and various immunohistochemical staining techniques.

Activities and responsibilities

We are looking for Bachelor-/Master, or Diploma candidates who are interested in working in the field of mass spectrometry/ proteomics and the research should lead to a successful dissertation.
Projects offered include the following topics:
  • The functional analysis of new immune-related biomarker candidates in the pathogenesis of glaucoma
  • Establishment and optimization of new LC-MS-based proteomic workflows for the high‑throughput screening of new biomarker candidates (e.g. 1-D SDS PAGE, IP, Co-IP)
  • Highly motivated students in the field of Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or similar) with strong interest in fundamental research
  • Excellent academic qualification
  • Experience in mass spectrometric analysis is highly desirable but not required
  • Basic knowledge in immunology is beneficial but not required
  • Ability to work independently in a collaborative research environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

We offer

The Experimental Ophthalmology features a well-equipped protein-biochemistry laboratory with all conventional electrophoretic systems, as well as a state-of-the-art MS laboratory including a robot for sample enrichment with magnetic nanoparticles and an automated platform for sample preparation, MALDI-TOF-TOF MS and LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS for protein profiling and biomarker identification. We offer a modern laboratory within our interdisciplinary working group and expertise.
